Levalet is van oorsprong een theaterman die uit protest ludieke paste-ups is gaan maken die het midden houden tussen Street Art, komiek, tragiek en drama. Levalet ofwel Charles Leval (1988) creëert locatiegebonden werk met behulp van oostindische inkt op papier. Hij combineert zijn kennis van theater en schilderen om gevatte werken te maken in de structuur van een stad. Daarbij heeft hij oog voor locaties die verrassen. Zijn werk is overal in Parijs zichtbaar, maar ook in nabijgelegen galerijen. Levalet studeerde schilderen en animatie in Strassburg en was oorspronkelijk vooral geïnteresseerd in video-installaties voor op straat. Hij stelt dat ‘Urban Art onderdeel is van de stadsidentiteit’, en speelt daarbij met publieke ruimte en privébezit.
Levalet heeft zich laten inspireren door o.a. Blek Le Rat Krzysztof, Wodiczko and Zevs .
De meeste tijd gaat zitten in het spotten van de locaties die zijn werk inspireren. Voor Heerlen had hij vooraf (via Google Maps ) een aantal interessante plekken geïdentificeerd. Die bleken – op een na- haalbaar, maar gelukkig werd ook voor de laatste locatie (Royal Theater) een akkoord gegeven. Het resultaat is er dan ook naar. Het werk van Levalet werd geplaatst achter het oude Royal Theater, in de Gasthuisstraat en in de Geleenstraat, deze laatste is helaas inmiddels verdwenen.
Levalet is originally a theatre man who started making playful paste-ups that straddle the line between Street Art, comedy, tragedy and drama in protest. Levalet aka Charles Leval (born 1988) creates site-specific work using India ink on paper. He combines his knowledge of theatre and painting to create witty works in the structure of a city. In doing so, he has an eye for locations that surprise. His work can be seen all over Paris, as well as in nearby galleries. Levalet studied painting and animation in Strassburg and was originally mainly interested in video installations for the street. He argues that ‘Urban Art is part of urban identity’, playing with public space and private property.
Levalet has drawn inspiration from Blek Le Rat Krzysztof, Wodiczko and Zevs among others .
Most of his time goes into spotting the locations that inspire his work. For Heerlen, he had previously identified (via Google Maps ) a number of interesting places. These turned out – with one exception – to be feasible, but fortunately the last location (Royal Theatre) was also approved. The result was accordingly. Levalet’s work was placed behind the old Royal Theatre, in Gasthuisstraat and in Geleenstraat, the latter of which has unfortunately disappeared by now.
