Reflection of oneself – Nunca

Name Artwork:  Reflection of oneself
Artist: Nunca
Location: Geerstraat / Parallelweg 1, Heerlen
Year: 2016

Nunca, Portuguese for “never”, is an artist from São Paulo in Brazil. Only after being invited (like Os Gemeos) to a street art exhibition at Tate Modern in London in 2008, did his work become appreciated in his home city.

However, the campaign against graffiti in São Paulo, “Cidade Limpa” (clean city) led -unfortunately- to the loss or grey repainting of many works by Nunca and his colleagues. Meanwhile, he is among the “greats of the world”.

Nunca stands for determination and not letting oneself be circumscribed. The image holds up a mirror to our world in which the fate of the indigenous Brazilian Indian is central in the face of ever-advancing Western civilisation, symbolised by the plane.
